A new medical plan for PIA retired employees is under consideration following a key meeting in Islamabad between officials from multiple departments. The meeting was attended by representatives from the PIA Holding Company, the Privatization Commission, State Life Insurance, and retired staff members, sources confirmed on Monday.
According to insiders, the main agenda was to address growing concerns over pension payments and medical benefits for retired employees after the national airline’s privatization. Many retirees had expressed uncertainty about the continuation of their healthcare coverage and financial entitlements.
The discussions focused on a proposed medical insurance plan that would provide retired PIA staff with uninterrupted access to health services even after the transfer of management. The proposal, developed in collaboration with State Life Insurance, aims to ensure that medical facilities and reimbursements remain available without financial strain on pensioners.
Officials from the PIA Holding Company reassured the participants that all employees’ rights and post-retirement benefits would be protected under the new arrangement. They added that the plan is being structured to minimize administrative delays and guarantee transparency in the process.
A committee has also been formed to review the current medical and pension framework, suggesting improvements to make the system more sustainable in the long term. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within the coming weeks.
Representatives from State Life Insurance briefed attendees about the coverage options and premium structures, highlighting that the proposed plan will be flexible, affordable, and designed to meet the specific needs of aging pensioners.
Retired employees welcomed the development but demanded written assurances to ensure their medical and pension benefits are not compromised during or after the privatization process. Many emphasized the need for a formal agreement that legally binds the new management to uphold the same standards of post-service support.
Meanwhile, this meeting follows the government’s broader efforts to stabilize and reform public institutions amid ongoing privatization initiatives.
In related provincial news, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz recently reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding citizens’ welfare and dignity during post-flood rehabilitation efforts.
The government’s focus on employee welfare both for active and retired personnel signals a push toward ensuring accountability and long-term stability across Pakistan’s public sector.
