PIA Eyes US and Global Routes Amid Ongoing Privatization Efforts

The Senate Standing Committee on Privatization was informed that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is expected to resume and expand its international operations this year. Officials said the airline may reopen routes to the United States, strengthening its global network.

The federal government expects to generate Rs. 55 billion from the ongoing PIA privatization process. In the past, the government had provided annual bailout packages of Rs. 50–60 billion to keep the airline operational. Privatization aims to reduce recurring losses and make PIA financially sustainable.

Officials explained that the privatization process will address PIA’s liabilities while keeping key assets under government ownership. This approach helps ease the financial burden on the national exchequer without selling valuable properties.

PIA retains ownership of strategic properties, including its holdings in the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and the Scribe Hotel in France. These assets will continue to be managed by the government as the airline undergoes operational and financial restructuring.

The privatization plan is expected to eliminate inefficiencies caused by political appointments and outdated operational practices. Officials believe that private investment and improved management will enhance PIA’s efficiency and profitability.

Expanded international operations, including potential flights to the U.S., are expected to increase revenue and restore the airline’s competitive position in the global aviation market. PIA will focus on improving services and attracting international passengers.

The government emphasized that privatization is a key step toward modernizing PIA. By reducing political interference and streamlining operations, authorities aim to make the airline a profitable and sustainable national carrier.
