The privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reached its final stages, marking a major development in the government’s economic reform agenda. Officials confirmed that all necessary documentation and evaluations are nearing completion, with potential investors shortlisted for the final bidding process.
According to sources, the Privatisation Commission has accelerated efforts to conclude the process by early next year. The move is aimed at transforming PIA into a financially sustainable and professionally managed entity after years of losses and mismanagement.
Several international and local firms have reportedly shown interest in acquiring a significant stake in the airline. The government has assured that transparency and fair competition will guide every step of the sale process.
Aviation experts believe privatisation could bring much-needed efficiency, better management, and customer service improvements to the national carrier. However, some employees and unions remain concerned about possible job cuts and restructuring.
The caretaker administration has stated that ensuring worker rights and maintaining smooth operations during the transition will remain top priorities. Negotiations are ongoing to address employees’ concerns before finalising the deal.
If completed successfully, PIA’s privatisation will mark one of Pakistan’s most significant corporate transformations in decades, potentially reshaping the country’s aviation landscape.
