In a recent social media post, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced the full restoration of flight operations, rebounding from the recent fuel crisis that had dealt a severe blow to both the airline and its passengers.

The airline conveyed a message of resilience in its post, stating, “I’ve faced numerous setbacks, but I’ve always managed to recover. I’m not defeated. My failures don’t define me; it’s my determination that makes me even stronger than before.”

The crisis unfolded last month when the national carrier was compelled to cancel more than 300 flights due to Pakistan State Oil (PSO), a state-owned entity, suspending fuel supply to PIA over unpaid dues. These cancellations affected both domestic flights from Islamabad to destinations like Gilgit, Quetta, and Multan, as well as international flights.

PIA has been grappling with financial challenges for an extended period. The airline requires approximately Rs100 million daily for fuel, and the disruption in fuel supply from PSO had a severe impact on flight operations. The government’s decision to privatize PIA, combined with the withdrawal of interim financial support, exacerbated the airline’s challenges.

Due to these economic viability issues, there have been calls for privatizing the national carrier. Former Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique emphasized the importance of privatization to ensure its survival.

In the past, it was decided during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Privatization, chaired by then Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, to include Pakistan International Airlines in the list of active privatization projects as a response to amendments in the law by the Parliament.
