Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been cleared to operate direct flights to the United Kingdom after the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) lifted its ban. This marks a significant step forward for PIA, which had been banned due to concerns over “fake degrees” among Pakistani pilots—a major issue raised during the PTI government tenure by the then-aviation minister.

The UK High Commission confirmed that Pakistani airlines, including PIA, can now seek operational clearance from the UK CAA to resume their services. The decision follows an independent and technical review process conducted by UK aviation authorities.

The British High Commissioner to Pakistan expressed appreciation for the collaboration between aviation experts from both countries. He welcomed the development, stating, “I look forward to flying with a Pakistani airline.” This statement signals renewed confidence in PIA and marks the end of a challenging period for the airline.

The removal of the ban is expected to improve air connectivity between Pakistan and the UK. This will not only facilitate travel but also help reunite families separated by the travel restrictions. In addition, the UK-Pakistan relationship will benefit economically, as Pakistan remains the UK’s third-largest trading partner in the region. Bilateral trade between the two nations currently stands at £4.7 billion annually.

Notably, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had lifted its ban on PIA in November 2024, paving the way for the airline’s potential return to UK airspace. The lifting of the UK ban now completes the regulatory steps for PIA to resume full operations between the two countries.

This move comes as a relief to many passengers who have faced disruptions due to the flight restrictions. It also signals a new chapter in the recovery of PIA’s international operations.
