PHF Chief Tariq Bugti Resigns After Australia Tour Controversy

Tariq Bugti stepped down as president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation following intense criticism over administrative failures during the national team’s recent tour of Australia. His resignation comes after days of controversy, player protests, and mounting public scrutiny regarding the management of team logistics and finances.

Speaking at a press conference, Bugti accused the Pakistan Sports Board of mismanagement and delayed funding. He claimed the federation could not meet travel and accommodation expenses for Pakistan’s participation in the FIH Pro League because funds were not released on time. According to him, this created serious logistical difficulties for players and officials during their stay abroad.

Bugti alleged that despite directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructing authorities to ensure timely financial support, delays persisted. He said he personally visited the PSB office seeking urgent clearance but was informed the process could take up to two months, leaving the team in uncertainty during an international tour.

However, Pakistan captain Ammad Shakeel Butt presented a contrasting account, stating that the prime minister had taken strict action against PHF leadership. He claimed orders had been issued to remove Bugti, Secretary Rana Mujahid, and team management after reports surfaced about poor arrangements and alleged administrative failures.

The dispute intensified when videos circulated online showing players living in substandard conditions during the tour. In response, the sports board formed an inquiry committee led by Chief Financial Officer Hasnat Ahmed, along with Saeed Ahmed Chaudhry and Rana Nasrullah. The panel completed its investigation within a day and submitted findings to Director General Yasir Pirzada.

Earlier tensions had already escalated after the team openly protested against federation leadership. Senior players said they could no longer continue under the existing administration, accusing officials of misleading them and failing to provide basic support. Before resigning, Bugti had also announced a two-year ban on captain Butt, alleging misconduct and threats against fellow players, further deepening the crisis.
