PHC Permits PTI To Conduct Election Campaign

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) issued a written order granting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) permission to hold rallies and conduct their election campaign while adhering to the law. The court emphasized that no political party should be denied the opportunity to actively participate in the electoral process. The PHC also instructed the caretaker provincial government to ensure transparent elections, stressing the need for a level-playing field for all political parties.

This ruling is significant in light of recent actions against the former ruling party, which has alleged a lack of a level-playing field in the lead-up to the elections. PTI claimed that they were prevented from holding conventions, campaigning, and faced restricted media coverage, with their requests for permission repeatedly denied by the district administration.

The Advocate General for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) contested the validity of PTI’s petition, stating that there was no public ban on the party. Instead, he referred to Section 14 of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Civil Administration Act 2020, which requires permission from the administration for holding meetings and conventions.

As per the court’s findings, PTI pledged to obtain the necessary permission for their election campaign, and the advocate general assured that the district administration would fulfill its legal obligations in this regard.
