Press Freedom Movement Gains Momentum
PFUJ President Afzal Butt stated that the decision was made after extensive consultations across the country. He, along with Secretary General Arshad Ansari, announced that hunger strike camps would be set up at press clubs nationwide. Political leaders, lawyers, human rights activists, and civil society representatives are expected to join the protest.
Warning of Further Action
The PFUJ leadership has warned the government that if PECA is not withdrawn, they are prepared for a prolonged sit-in, reminiscent of past struggles for press freedom.
“We are ready to repeat history, just as we did during the struggle against General Zia-ul-Haq,” said Afzal Butt, emphasizing the union’s commitment to independent journalism.
Arshad Ansari reminded the government of the journalists’ 72-day sit-in against former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf. “If this protest fails to achieve its objective, we will call for a sit-in in front of Parliament House,” he warned.
