Sales of petroleum products in Pakistan recorded a three per cent increase during the first seven months of the current financial year. According to industry data, 9.67 million tonnes of petroleum products were sold during this period, compared with 9.41 million tonnes in the same period last year.
In January alone, sales reached 1.52 million tonnes, up 10 per cent from 1.38 million tonnes in January last year. Compared with December, petroleum product sales rose 12 per cent nationwide, when 1.35 million tonnes were sold.
The breakdown of sales shows 4.50 million tonnes of petrol, 4.24 million tonnes of high-speed diesel, and 0.26 million tonnes of furnace oil were sold during the first seven months. In the same period last year, petrol sales totaled 4.37 million tonnes, diesel 4.06 million tonnes, and furnace oil 0.41 million tonnes.
This year, petrol and diesel sales increased by 3 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively, while furnace oil sales declined by 36 per cent, reflecting reduced industrial demand.
Among companies, Pakistan State Oil (PSO) sold 4.07 million tonnes, down five per cent from 4.28 million tonnes in the same period last year. Attock Petroleum Limited recorded sales of 0.80 million tonnes, and Hascol Petroleum Ltd sold 0.30 million tonnes.
Analysts say the growth in petroleum product sales indicates a steady rise in transportation fuel demand. The decline in furnace oil usage highlights changes in industrial energy consumption patterns.
