Pakistan Prepares for Petrol Price Hike What You Need to Know

The Petrol price in Pakistan is expected to increase from February 16, according to an initial working paper prepared by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The proposed hikes could range between Rs4 and Rs6.55 per litre, depending on the product.

The OGRA working paper will be sent to the petroleum ministry for review. The finance ministry will then examine the recommendations before the federal government makes a final decision. Authorities are considering the country’s revenue requirements and fiscal conditions before approving any changes.

For petrol specifically, the working paper proposes an increase of Rs4.39 per litre. High-speed diesel (HSD) is expected to rise by Rs5.40 per litre. These adjustments are significant because they directly affect transportation costs and overall inflation in Pakistan.

Other petroleum products are also set for price adjustments. Kerosene oil could see an increase of Rs4 per litre, while light diesel oil (LDO) may experience the highest hike of Rs6.55 per litre. If approved, these changes will come into effect from February 16.

Sources have cautioned that additional levies or taxes could push the Petrol price and other petroleum products even higher than currently proposed. Consumers and businesses are advised to prepare for possible increases in fuel costs, which could affect goods and services nationwide.

Previously, on January 31, the government announced petroleum price adjustments for the fortnight starting February 1. Petrol prices remained unchanged at Rs253.17 per litre, while high-speed diesel rose by Rs11.30 per litre, bringing the new price to Rs268.38 per litre.
