Petition Filed in Lahore High Court Against Basant Celebrations

A notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore allowing the celebration of Basant has been formally challenged in the Lahore High Court, raising concerns over public safety and past incidents linked to kite flying.

The petition was filed by Advocate Azhar Siddique, who questioned the legality of the notification that permits Basant celebrations on February 6, 7, and 8. The petitioner argued that allowing the event poses serious risks to citizens, particularly due to the continued use of dangerous kite strings.

According to the petition, recent incidents have once again highlighted these dangers, as a young girl and a young man sustained serious injuries after being struck by sharp kite strings. The plea noted that similar accidents in previous years have resulted in fatalities and severe harm, turning what is meant to be a cultural festival into a life-threatening activity for the public.

The petitioner maintained that despite repeated tragedies, effective safeguards have not been ensured, and permitting Basant under such circumstances violates the fundamental right to life and safety. He argued that the authorities should prioritize public protection over festivities that have a documented history of causing serious injuries and deaths.

Advocate Siddique urged the Lahore High Court to direct the Deputy Commissioner to immediately withdraw the notification that allows Basant celebrations. He also requested the court to suspend the notification as an interim measure until a final decision is reached on the main petition.
