Daily travel in Peshawar has become more expensive after the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system increased its fares. Now, commuters traveling up to 5 km will pay Rs30 instead of Rs20, while those covering up to 40 km will be charged Rs70, up from Rs60. The standard single-ride ticket has also been raised to Rs70, with an extra Rs10 for each additional stop.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority issued the notification on June 16, citing inflation and rising operational costs as reasons for the hike. However, the decision has sparked criticism, especially from low-income commuters who say the move contradicts BRT’s aim of affordable transport.

Many passengers expressed frustration, pointing out that the increased fares place a heavier burden on people already struggling with soaring inflation.

This fare adjustment comes at a time when the country is already facing a worsening cost-of-living crisis, affecting fuel, food, and other basic needs.
