PCB Parts Ways With Team Director Mohammad Hafeez

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken the decision to relieve Senior Team Director, Mohammad Hafeez, of his duties following a dismal performance during the recent tours of Australia and New Zealand.

Hafeez had been entrusted with the responsibility of mentoring the team during their campaigns in Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, the outcomes were far from satisfactory, with Pakistan enduring a string of defeats, losing seven out of the eight matches played under his guidance.

The coaching staff structure appeared to lack clarity, as almost every coach had their own assistant, leaving the roles and objectives of each professional unclear. This organizational ambiguity may have contributed to the team’s lackluster performance during this period.

Pakistan faced a clean sweep by Australia in the Test series, with a disappointing 0-3 result. The T20I series against New Zealand also ended on a disheartening note, with Pakistan managing to secure only one victory out of the five matches, resulting in a 1-4 series defeat.

While Hafeez, affectionately known as the ‘Professor,’ was renowned for his strategic acumen during his playing days, his transition to a coaching role did not yield the anticipated positive results. The challenges faced during his first stint as a backroom staffer underscore the complexities of the coaching role at the international level.

During his playing career, Hafeez formed a formidable trio alongside Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi. This trio was recognized for its ability to wreak havoc during the middle-overs in limited-overs matches, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s success on numerous occasions.

However, the recent coaching venture has proven to be a different ball game for Hafeez. The inability to bring about significant changes in the team’s performance in a short span has led to the decision by PCB to part ways with him as the Team Director.

The decision to release Hafeez reflects the commitment of PCB to evaluate and make necessary adjustments to enhance the team’s coaching setup. The disappointment of the recent tours has prompted a reassessment of the coaching staff structure and dynamics to ensure a more cohesive and effective approach moving forward.

As the search for a new direction and leadership continues, PCB aims to address the challenges faced during the Australia and New Zealand tours and forge a coaching setup that can guide the team towards improved performances in future international competitions.
