The Asia Cup 2025 clash between Pakistan and India ended in controversy after the Indian team refused to shake hands with Pakistani players. The incident drew strong criticism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his disappointment on his official X account. He described the behavior as “extremely disappointing” and said that bringing politics into sports goes against the true spirit of the game. “Utterly disappointing to witness the lack of sportsmanship today. Let’s hope future victories are celebrated with grace, dignity, and decency,” he posted.
Pakistan’s T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, boycotted the post-match ceremony in protest. He also refused to speak with an Indian commentator during the event. Sources confirmed that he would have attended the ceremony if it had been conducted by a Pakistani host.
The PCB’s coaching staff also weighed in on the matter. Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson called India’s behavior unsportsmanlike. He confirmed that Salman Ali Agha’s protest led the team management to file a formal complaint with the match referee over the Indian squad’s conduct.
India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav, who scored the winning runs, left the field with teammate Shivam Dube without approaching Pakistani players for the customary handshake. Pakistani players waited on the field, expecting the traditional gesture, but the Indian team only shook hands among themselves before heading to the dressing room.
Yadav later admitted that his team intentionally avoided the handshake as a form of protest, reflecting ongoing political tensions between the two countries.
The PCB’s strong response highlights the importance of sportsmanship in cricket. Officials stressed that international matches should be conducted in a spirit of respect, regardless of political disputes. The board also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting players in upholding the integrity of the game.
This incident has sparked discussions about the role of politics in sports and the responsibilities of teams during international competitions.
