PCB Appoints Aqib Javed as Interim Red-Ball Coach Following Gillespie's Departure

Aqib Javed Appointed Interim Red-Ball Head Coach of Pakistan Men’s Cricket Team

LAHORE – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Aqib Javed as the interim red-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, following the resignation of Jason Gillespie.

Aqib’s first major task as interim head coach will be the two-match Test series against South Africa during the ongoing all-format tour. The first Test is scheduled to take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion from 26 to 30 December, while the second Test will be held at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from 3 to 7 January.

The Pakistan men’s cricket team is currently in South Africa, participating in a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series.

This move comes after Jason Gillespie resigned as the red-ball head coach of Pakistan’s Test team ahead of the South Africa series, following tensions with the PCB. One of the key issues was the PCB’s decision not to extend the contract of Gillespie’s assistant, Tim Nielsen.

The resignation of Gillespie adds to the growing strain in the PCB’s relationship with foreign coaches, following similar issues with former coach Gary Kirsten. In addition, Tim Nielsen, the High-Performance Test Coach who had been brought in by Gillespie in August, was also let go by the PCB, with the board choosing not to extend his contract for the South Africa series.
