PCB accelerates Multan Sultans sale as PSL interest rises

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to expedite the sale of the Multan Sultans franchise, opting to sell the team immediately rather than waiting until next year, according to sources. This move comes amid rising investor interest in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), as the board seeks to capitalize on current momentum.

During the recent auctions for the new Hyderabad and Sialkot franchises, the PCB reportedly received strong indications that investors are also keen on acquiring Multan Sultans. In response, the board has accelerated the sale process to take advantage of the growing enthusiasm and ensure competitive bidding. Sources confirmed that the auction for Multan Sultans will now take place before the next PSL season, with an official advertisement expected soon to invite qualified bidders. The procedure for the sale will mirror the approach used for Hyderabad and Sialkot franchises.

The decision is also aimed at boosting the PCB’s financial position. Officials believe an immediate sale could attract strong offers given the league’s current popularity. This comes after a transitional period for the franchise, following the exit of former owner Ali Tareen. Tareen chose not to renew his contract after seven years, citing differences with PSL management and other franchise owners. He described his tenure as one of the greatest honours of his life and emphasized that the decision was principle-driven rather than financial. Tareen also highlighted the team’s significance as a symbol of South Punjab.

To maintain continuity ahead of PSL 11, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the board would temporarily manage Multan Sultans. While earlier plans suggested an auction after the season, the board’s latest move indicates a shift toward an earlier sale.

In recent biddings, Sialkot and Hyderabad Named as New PSL Teams
