During Monday’s session at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Palestinian representatives, led by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki and UN envoy Riyad Mansour, emphatically advocated for an immediate end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The delegation, consisting of several other representatives, began presenting their case in The Hague on Monday and the hearings are scheduled to continue until February 26.
This legal proceeding was initiated in response to a request from the UN General Assembly seeking an advisory opinion on the matter of occupation. Over 50 nations are slated to present their arguments before the ICJ by the end of the current week. The focus of this case is distinct from the ongoing South African-led genocide case against Israel, which centers around Israel’s deadly war in Gaza. Instead, this particular case aims to establish the legal consequences associated with Israel’s prolonged occupation of Palestinian territories spanning several decades.

The impetus for this ICJ intervention was a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in December 2022. The resolution garnered support from 87 member states, calling for the ICJ to provide an advisory, nonbinding opinion on Israel’s 57-year occupation of Palestinian territories. Notably, 26 countries, including the United States, voted against the resolution.
As the hearings unfold at the ICJ, the international community keenly observes the legal proceedings, anticipating a significant decision that could shape the discourse around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the enduring occupation of Palestinian lands.
