Fuel Supply Under Pressure as Pakistan’s Petroleum Reserves Drop

Pakistan’s Petroleum Reserves are currently sufficient for only a few weeks, the Secretary of Petroleum told the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum in Islamabad on Monday. Despite limited stocks, officials assured lawmakers that fuel products remain available across the country.

During the briefing, the secretary provided detailed figures on Pakistan’s Petroleum Reserves. Petrol stocks are enough for 27 days, high-speed diesel for 21 days, jet fuel (JP-1) for 14 days, crude oil for 11 days, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for nine days. Authorities emphasized that these supplies are being monitored to ensure uninterrupted availability nationwide.

Senator Manzoor Ahmed questioned the government’s recent decision to increase petroleum prices despite the existence of significant reserves. “If the country had 28 days of stocks, why were prices raised?” he asked.

The Secretary of Petroleum explained that the price hike was due to logistical challenges. Movement of oil tankers and disruptions in supply routes have complicated fuel deliveries.

He also highlighted the impact of rising tensions in the Middle East. Nearly 70 percent of Pakistan’s petroleum imports come from the region. Delays in shipping have affected the timely arrival of fuel consignments.

Global fuel prices have surged sharply. High-speed diesel prices rose from $88 to $187 per barrel, while petrol increased from $74 to $130 per barrel. These international trends have contributed to higher domestic fuel costs.

To maintain supply, the government has temporarily allowed the import of fuel below Euro-5 quality standards. Oil shipments from Arab countries usually take four to five days to reach Pakistan.

A ministerial committee formed by the Prime Minister is reviewing the petroleum situation daily. Officials stressed that, despite the price increase, petrol, diesel, and LPG remain available nationwide.

The Petroleum Reserves continue to be closely monitored to prevent shortages. The government is actively managing imports, logistics, and domestic distribution to ensure stability in the fuel supply chain.
