The National Grid Company of Pakistan Limited (NGC) will launch a new operating model starting July 1, 2026. This move aims to improve efficiency, accountability, and reliability in Pakistan’s power transmission system.
The announcement was made during a briefing to Power Minister Awais Leghari, who reiterated full government support for the reforms. He called the transformation essential for strengthening Pakistan’s national energy infrastructure.
The reform process began in January 2026 to tackle long-standing structural issues inherited from NGC’s predecessor, the National Transmission and Dispatch Company. Challenges included fragmented responsibilities and operational inefficiencies that affected the reliability of Pakistan’s electricity supply.
Key changes under the new framework will focus on improving project execution, enhancing financial oversight, strengthening regulatory coordination, and deploying modern digital systems for better grid management. Officials said these upgrades will make the grid more responsive and efficient.
NGC Managing Director Altaf Hussain Malik highlighted that the goal is to align the company with global best practices. “Our aim is to build a modern, accountable, and efficient transmission network that meets the needs of Pakistan’s growing energy demand,” he said.
Officials confirmed that key leadership positions have already been filled. Digital systems are nearing completion, with full operational maturity expected by the end of 2026.
The overhaul is part of Pakistan’s broader effort to modernize its energy sector. Authorities hope the reforms will ensure a more reliable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industries nationwide, reducing power outages and improving overall grid management.
