Pakistan’s Weekly Inflation Drops Eggs and Tomatoes Become Cheaper

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday that weekly inflation in Pakistan fell by 0.59 percent, bringing the overall rate to 4.26 percent.

The data revealed that prices of 15 essential commodities increased over the past week, while 15 items recorded a decrease. Among the items that saw a rise were garlic, up 4.35 percent, mash lentils by 3 percent, and red chillies by 1.68 percent. Beef, ghee, cigarettes, and clothing also experienced price increases.

Conversely, several essential items saw price declines. Egg prices dropped by 18 percent, tomatoes fell 12 percent, and chicken decreased by 6.34 percent. Minor reductions were also recorded in salt, wheat flour, sugar, and LPG.

On a yearly basis, certain commodities showed significant changes. Tomato prices rose by 73 percent and wheat flour by 34 percent. In contrast, potato prices fell by 45 percent, while live broiler chicken prices declined by 20 percent.

Analysts said that while the fall in weekly inflation offers temporary relief for consumers, rising prices of essential items on a yearly basis continue to strain household budgets. Staple foods remain the most affected, causing concerns among low- and middle-income families.

The PBS report provides detailed insights into weekly inflation trends, helping policymakers, economists, and businesses understand cost-of-living changes across Pakistan. The data is expected to guide economic planning and inform strategies to stabilize food prices and essential commodities.
