ISLAMABAD, July 23, 2025 – The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has approved a major Pakistan airport upgrade initiative. Two more airports, Sukkur and Dera Ismail Khan, are set to be upgraded to international standards.
Officials confirmed that Sukkur Airport will undergo expansion, including an extended runway to accommodate larger aircraft. Meanwhile, the airport in Dera Ismail Khan will be fully rebuilt as a modern facility.

In addition to Sukkur and DI Khan, Rahim Yar Khan Airport will also be upgraded. Its runway will be extended and existing infrastructure improved to handle more passenger traffic.
Another major development is the proposal to construct a new airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The decision will be finalized after the government completes a feasibility study.
The push for an airport in AJK has been ongoing for years. It was strongly supported by overseas Pakistanis, especially those living in the United Kingdom. A letter from British MPs of Kashmiri origin recently urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address the issue.
