The Hockey Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place in Rajgir, Bihar, India, from August 27 to September 7. According to Indian media reports, Pakistan will participate in the tournament despite ongoing political tensions between the two countries.
The decision was made after the Indian interior, foreign, and sports ministries granted approval for Pakistan’s participation. A spokesperson from India’s sports ministry confirmed that there were no objections to international teams joining events hosted by India.
However, the ministry clarified that this clearance applies only to international multi-nation tournaments. Matters involving bilateral series between India and Pakistan are still considered sensitive and would be dealt with separately.
The Hockey Asia Cup is one of the most important events on the Asian hockey calendar. It also serves as a qualifying event for global competitions, including the FIH Hockey World Cup. Participation is crucial for all top Asian teams aiming for international recognition and rankings.
Alongside the senior team’s involvement in the Asia Cup, Pakistan is also expected to take part in the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup, scheduled to be held in Chennai and Madurai, Tamil Nadu, from November 28 to December 10, 2025.
Despite the strained political climate, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, both India and Pakistan appear committed to separating sports from politics. Experts say such steps are essential to uphold the spirit of international competition and fair play.
The inclusion of all qualified teams, including Pakistan, will ensure that the Hockey Asia Cup 2025 is competitive, complete, and representative of the best talent across Asia.
This move is being welcomed by sports communities on both sides, who see it as a positive step toward regional engagement.
