Pakistan to obtain Turkish armored vehicles through Kazakhstan

Pakistan is set to enhance its military mobility and border security by acquiring Turkish-designed armored vehicles manufactured in Kazakhstan, marking the beginning of a new trilateral defense collaboration across Eurasia.

The agreement was formalized during the state visit of Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Pakistan in February 2026. Under the deal, Pakistan will procure advanced armored vehicles based on Turkish designs while utilizing Kazakhstan’s local production facilities.

Vehicle Deliveries and Capabilities

The first phase includes the Aibar 4×4 armored vehicle, Kazakhstan’s locally produced version of Türkiye’s Otokar Cobra II platform. Pakistan will also receive the Taimas 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle, derived from the Otokar ARMA 8×8 platform. Although financial details remain undisclosed, analysts estimate the initial package could range between $300 million and $600 million, covering several hundred vehicles.

The agreement also provides comprehensive support, including maintenance infrastructure, spare parts supply, technical assistance, and personnel training.

Enhancing Counterinsurgency and Border Operations

Officials emphasize that these vehicles will strengthen Pakistan’s internal security and counterinsurgency capabilities, particularly along the western border with Afghanistan. The Aibar 4×4 can carry up to ten personnel and is suitable for troop transport, convoy escort, border patrol, and reconnaissance. Equipped with remote weapon stations, machine guns, grenade launchers, and anti-tank missiles, it offers protection against mines and IEDs in mountainous regions.

The Taimas 8×8 boosts mechanized infantry firepower with a VN-11 combat module, including a 100mm rifled gun, a 30mm automatic cannon, a coaxial machine gun, and anti-tank guided missiles, allowing engagement of infantry, armored vehicles, and fortified positions across rough terrain.

Strategic Defense-Industrial Partnership

Beyond the vehicles, the deal establishes a logistics and industrial framework connecting Pakistani forces to Kazakhstan’s production capabilities. The arrangement reflects Pakistan’s evolving procurement strategy of integrating multiple defense partners while enabling Türkiye to expand its international defense footprint.

Kazakhstan aims to become a regional defense manufacturing hub linking Europe, Russia, and Asia. Experts suggest the trilateral partnership could grow into joint production, local assembly, and further armored platforms, potentially creating a new Eurasian defense corridor.
