Pakistan to construct Rs.100 billion highway linking Karachi and Chaman

Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Gill Asghar Khan told the National Assembly on Monday that Rs. 100 billion has been earmarked in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025–26 for the construction of the Karachi–Quetta–Chaman road.

During the question hour, Khan highlighted that the government is committed to completing all 72 priority projects under the National Highway Authority (NHA) across Pakistan. These initiatives, he said, are central to enhancing the country’s road network and ensuring smooth transportation links between key regions.

He explained that the plan addresses procedural bottlenecks, funding constraints, land acquisition issues, and technical challenges that have historically delayed infrastructure development. By streamlining processes, the government aims to accelerate progress and meet project deadlines.

Khan also mentioned that feasibility studies and realignment work are currently in progress on significant motorway schemes, including the M-9 and M-10. These upgrades are expected to improve efficiency, safety, and connectivity for commuters and transporters alike.

Reassuring lawmakers, the parliamentary secretary stressed that all 72 shortlisted NHA projects will be completed within the prescribed timelines. He added that particular attention will be given to infrastructure development in Balochistan, recognizing the province’s strategic importance for trade and economic growth.

The Karachi–Quetta–Chaman route is seen as a vital trade corridor linking Pakistan’s largest port city with the Afghan border, making its timely completion a top national priority.
