Government To Establish Green Ship Recycling Yard At Port Qasim

Pakistan is set to establish its first Green Ship Repair and Recycling Yard at Port Qasim, a major step toward developing an eco-friendly and modern maritime sector. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry made the announcement, highlighting the project’s role in promoting sustainable ship recycling and supporting the country’s blue economy.

The Port Qasim project will be developed under the “Sea to Steel Integrated Maritime Industrial Complex.” The minister said that Rs. 12 billion will also be invested to modernize the Gaddani Ship Recycling Yard to meet international environmental and safety standards. This move aims to position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global ship recycling industry while protecting marine ecosystems.

Chaudhry added that the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) fleet has grown from 10 to 12 ships, with three more expected to join within two months. Tenders for 12 additional vessels are already underway, showing steady expansion in Pakistan’s maritime capabilities.

In another milestone, the Maritime Affairs Ministry has granted the first-ever license to a private company to operate ferry services. Furthermore, the Pakistan Marine Academy will be upgraded into a full-fledged Maritime University through the newly created Maritime Education Endowment Fund, which will strengthen education and training in the maritime field.

The government’s maritime strategy also includes the development of three new deep-sea ports, AI-enabled industrial complexes, and “Made-in-Pakistan” ships. These initiatives aim to create green digital ports with advanced connectivity and modern infrastructure.

According to the minister, the government is also implementing a $100 billion blue economy plan to make Pakistan a leading maritime hub by 2047. The Port Qasim initiative, combined with broader modernization efforts, reflects Pakistan’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in the maritime sector.
