Pakistan Takes Over UN Security Council Presidency, Vows to Champion Peace and Multilateralism

Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July 2025, with Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad pledging to promote multilateralism, uphold international law, and ensure an inclusive approach to the Council’s work. This marks another milestone in Pakistan’s active diplomatic role at the UN, as part of its current two-year term as a non-permanent member.

In an interview with APP, Ambassador Iftikhar stated, “Pakistan’s Presidency will be transparent, inclusive and responsive,” emphasizing the country’s commitment to navigating a complex global environment marked by conflict and humanitarian crises. The presidency of the 15-member Council rotates monthly, and Pakistan’s previous terms date as far back as 1952, with its most recent in 2012-13.

During its July presidency, Pakistan will host two high-level signature events—one on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, and another focusing on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). These events reflect Pakistan’s diplomatic priorities of preventive diplomacy, regional cooperation, and collective peace-building.

Ambassador Iftikhar also met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to outline the Council’s agenda for the month. Key global issues expected to be addressed include ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and evolving situations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Pakistan’s presidency aims to steer the Council toward timely, consensus-based decisions that align with the expectations of the broader UN membership.

Elected with an overwhelming 182 out of 193 votes, Pakistan enters the presidency with strong support from the international community. Its track record in UN peacekeeping and advocacy for dialogue positions it as a balanced and principled leader in the Council.
