Pakistan Set to Compete in a Five-Match Test Series in England

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly considering a revival of five-match Test series against teams outside the ‘Big Three’ as part of its strategy to boost interest in the longest format of cricket. English media reports on Monday indicate that Pakistan and South Africa are among the potential opponents for these extended series, with the first series possibly scheduled for the summer of 2028.

The ECB believes that longer Test series can help renew interest in the game by allowing narratives to develop over multiple matches. A report noted that the ECB sees extended series as a way to enhance the overall appeal of Test cricket, beyond the traditional contests against the ‘Big Three’, by creating a more festive and engaging experience for fans and players alike.

Pakistan and South Africa, with their historic rivalries against England and strong fan support in the UK, have been identified as the most likely candidates for these series. The ECB is reportedly considering both four-match and five-match formats.

If this plan comes to fruition, it would represent a significant milestone in England’s cricketing calendar. Notably, England last played a five-match Test series against Pakistan in 1992, a memorable contest that ended in a 2-1 victory for Pakistan, led by Javed Miandad.

The proposed five-match series against Pakistan or South Africa is expected to take place in the summer of 2028, fitting into the schedule between England’s home Ashes series against Australia and their Test series against India.
