Pakistan has formally requested international assistance to evaluate the destruction caused by recent floods. The disasters claimed over 1,000 lives and left widespread damage across the country.
Officials said the request aims to provide an accurate assessment of both human and economic losses. The Economic Affairs Division reached out to the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Union, and UNDP, seeking technical support from global experts.
The collaboration will focus on estimating damage to life, infrastructure, property, agriculture, and rural livelihoods. The World Bank confirmed it is ready to assist Pakistan in assessing the flood impact. Officials stated that the Bank received Pakistan’s formal request and responded positively.
Initial estimates show that losses could exceed Rs700 billion. Authorities emphasize that independent verification is necessary before launching long-term recovery and reconstruction plans. The floods also caused a severe human toll, with more than 1,100 people injured. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded over 500 fatalities, while Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir suffered heavy infrastructure and agricultural damage.
Agriculture and rural areas in Punjab were hit hardest. Roads and bridges in remote Gilgit-Baltistan districts were destroyed. In Azad Kashmir, homes and public infrastructure were damaged. Nationwide, over 12,500 houses and 240 bridges were affected. Schools, hospitals, and roads were also destroyed, leaving many communities isolated.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab is conducting the largest flood survey in the province’s history. About 1,857 teams are collecting data across 27 districts, recording 81,510 victims so far. Damage to crops, houses, and livestock is being carefully documented.
Representatives from various government departments and the Pakistan Army are supporting the survey. PDMA DG Irfan Ali said teams are working day and night, using boats and wading through floodwaters to ensure transparency and accuracy. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to follow the Punjab Chief Minister’s vision for precise data collection.
Pakistan continues to coordinate with international partners to ensure reliable assessments and effective planning for post-flood recovery.
