Pakistan Stands 33rd Globally In Debt, Behind US And India

A new report by World Population Review has placed the United States at the top of the global debt list, with a national debt of $32.9 trillion. This figure equals around $76,000 per American citizen, making it the highest per-person debt burden in the world.

In comparison, Pakistan ranks far below the United States and even India. According to the report, Pakistan holds the 33rd position among the most indebted nations, with a total public debt of $260.8 billion. This amount equals an average debt of $543 per citizen.

India’s Position and Other Major Economies
India ranked seventh globally, with a total debt of $3 trillion. The report shows that each Indian citizen carries a debt of approximately $504. The list also includes the United Kingdom and France, both with debts of $3.4 trillion, followed by Italy with $3.1 trillion, Germany at $2.8 trillion, Canada at $2.3 trillion, and Brazil at $1.8 trillion.

Debt in Muslim-Majority Countries
Among Muslim-majority countries, Indonesia has the highest national debt at $543 billion. It is followed by Egypt with $377 billion, Turkey with $330 billion, Saudi Arabia at $280 billion, and Malaysia with $278 billion. Pakistan remains below these countries in total debt, but its ranking still highlights ongoing financial challenges.

Bangladesh also features in the report with a national debt of $177.6 billion, averaging $611 per citizen. Meanwhile, Afghanistan has one of the lowest debt levels in the world at just $1.6 billion, translating to $30 per person.

Pakistan’s Economic Context
The findings underline Pakistan’s position as a developing economy facing moderate but growing debt levels. Although its debt remains far below that of major economies, financial experts stress the need for sustainable fiscal policies to manage liabilities and maintain economic stability.
