Pakistan Petroleum To Construct Artificial Island For Offshore Exploration

akistan Petroleum, the state-owned energy company, has announced the construction of an artificial island off the coast of Sindh. The project aims to accelerate offshore oil and gas exploration in Pakistan.

The island will be located approximately 30 kilometers from Sujawal and will serve as a central platform for drilling operations. Arshad Palekar, General Manager for Exploration and Core Business Development at Pakistan Petroleum, said the six-foot-high platform is designed to withstand high tides and enable round-the-clock drilling activities.

Speaking at an oil and gas conference in Islamabad, Palekar described the project as Pakistan’s first artificial island for offshore energy operations. He added that the design draws on Abu Dhabi’s experience with similar platforms. Construction is expected to be completed by February, with drilling operations set to begin immediately afterward. Pakistan Petroleum plans to drill about 25 wells from this new platform.

The initiative comes amid a growing focus on offshore exploration in Pakistan. In July, U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted the country’s “massive oil reserves,” prompting the government to issue new offshore exploration licenses to Pakistan Petroleum, Mari Energies Ltd., and Prime International Oil and Gas Co.

The artificial island is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s energy infrastructure and boost domestic oil and gas production. Analysts say such projects can help reduce reliance on imported energy while supporting long-term economic growth.

Pakistan Petroleum’s project demonstrates its commitment to innovation and leveraging international expertise. The new platform is a significant milestone in Pakistan’s energy sector and may serve as a model for future offshore development.
