Pakistan’s first free pulmonary rehabilitation center has been established at Dow University of Health Sciences.
The facility, named the Dr Syed Ashiq Hussain Rehabilitation Center, was inaugurated at the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nazli Hussain Hossain.
The center has been dedicated to the memory of the late Dr Syed Ashiq Hussain, who served as the head of the institute. Officials said the facility aims to provide free treatment and rehabilitation services to patients suffering from lung diseases, particularly those with chronic respiratory conditions.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is considered vital for patients with long-term breathing problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and post-tuberculosis complications. Health experts believe this step will provide much-needed support to patients who struggle to access affordable treatment.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Dr Nazli Hussain Hossain highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare. She said the new center will improve the quality of life for patients and help reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses in Pakistan.
In addition to the rehabilitation center, Dr Hossain also inaugurated the Intravenous Admixture and Compounding Pharmacy at the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases. The new pharmacy facility will ensure accurate preparation and safe administration of intravenous medications, reducing risks for patients and improving hospital services.
The launch of these facilities marks a major step for Dow University in expanding its role in community healthcare. Experts say the rehabilitation center will also train healthcare professionals in pulmonary care, increasing awareness and capacity to handle respiratory diseases across the country.
This development comes at a time when healthcare initiatives in Pakistan are gaining wider attention, alongside global news involving public figures. Recently, Prince Harry clarified his stance on William in court, showing how both social and health-related stories continue to dominate headlines.
Officials believe the new facilities at Dow will serve as a model for other institutions in Pakistan. Patients suffering from respiratory conditions can now access specialized rehabilitation programs free of cost, offering hope to many families who cannot afford private treatment.
