Pakistan observed Navy Day on Monday to honor the heroes of the 1965 war. The day commemorates the courage, sacrifice, and professionalism of naval forces who defended the country against a larger adversary.
The commemoration highlights Operation Somnath, when Pakistan Navy warships launched a successful strike on Indian shore installations at Dwarka. The attack inflicted damage on enemy targets and demonstrated naval strength. Pakistan’s first submarine, PNS Ghazi, also played a decisive role in the conflict, emerging as a powerful deterrent and symbol of operational superiority.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif issued messages to mark the occasion. The President praised the Navy’s evolution into a modern, multi-dimensional force, while honoring the sacrifices of martyrs and the resilience of ghazis. The Prime Minister lauded the Navy’s recent successes, including Operation Marka-e-Haq, and emphasized its expanding role beyond defense.
He highlighted the Navy’s work in developing ports, supporting the blue economy, and offering humanitarian aid. He also stressed its contribution in protecting maritime trade routes and delivering disaster relief, which have enhanced Pakistan’s standing at the global level.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, in his Navy Day message, saluted the courage of naval warriors. He reaffirmed the Navy’s resolve to safeguard Pakistan’s maritime borders and ensure uninterrupted seaborne trade. He also underlined the Navy’s commitment to supporting economic growth through sustainable maritime initiatives.
The Naval Chief further announced that the second Pakistan International Maritime Exhibition and Conference will take place in Karachi from November 3 to 6.
As the nation observed Navy Day, tributes were paid to the bravery and sacrifices of Pakistan Navy personnel. Their legacy of courage continues to inspire future generations.
