The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced an 18-member Test squad on Tuesday for the upcoming home series against South Africa. Shan Masood will continue as captain of the national team.
The squad includes three uncapped players — Asif Afridi, Faisal Akram, and Rohail Nazir. Their selection adds fresh talent to Pakistan’s lineup, with a focus on spin and wicketkeeping depth.
A national training camp will be held in Lahore from September 30 to October 8. Players currently taking part in the Asia Cup will join the squad on October 4.
The first Test match between Pakistan and South Africa is scheduled at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, from October 12 to 16. The second Test will take place in Rawalpindi from October 20 to 24.
Senior players Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been named in the squad. Alongside them, Abdullah Shafiq, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, and Saud Shakeel have also been retained.
The bowling attack is a blend of pace and spin. Fast bowlers include Aamir Jamal, Hassan Ali, and Khurram Shahzad. The spin department features Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Kamran Ghulam, and Abrar Ahmed, giving Pakistan a balanced attack for home conditions.
Left-arm spinner Asif Afridi and young left-arm spinner Faisal Akram are making their first appearance in the national squad. Wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir has also earned a recall, strengthening backup options behind the stumps.
Analysts say the inclusion of new players reflects PCB’s strategy to prepare for the future while relying on experienced performers. The series against South Africa will be an important test for Shan Masood’s leadership and for Pakistan’s readiness in red-ball cricket.
With strong opponents visiting, Pakistan will look to secure a series win and build momentum for upcoming international fixtures.
