Pakistan Launches First Environmental Drone Surveillance System in Punjab
LAHORE – In a groundbreaking step towards combating pollution, Pakistan has launched its first environmental drone surveillance system, with operations kicking off in Punjab under the leadership of the Environment Department. The initiative aims to revolutionize how authorities monitor and respond to environmental violations, particularly industrial pollution.
Thermal Drone Tech Takes to the Skies
The department has partnered with a newly established aerial surveillance company, deploying cutting-edge drones equipped with thermal imaging technology. These drones are now actively patrolling pollution hotspots, providing real-time data and visual evidence of environmental violations.

In one of the earliest successes, the drones uncovered three illegal pyrolysis plants operating in the Mehmood Booti area of Lahore, along with four other polluting industries. Authorities also seized hundreds of carbon-filled sacks used in environmentally harmful processes.
Crackdown on Industrial Polluters Begins
Following the discoveries, a detailed report was submitted, and explanations have been sought from the concerned officers involved. This move signals a zero-tolerance approach to pollution and negligence.
A New Era in Environmental Oversight
“This is a new era for environmental monitoring in Pakistan,” said Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environment Department. “All industries and brick kilns across Punjab will be digitally mapped and monitored via drone surveillance. The performance of environmental officers will also be assessed using aerial footage.”
Officials believe this technology will help catch polluters red-handed, close monitoring gaps, and enhance transparency and accountability in environmental enforcement.
Looking Ahead
As Pakistan grapples with rising levels of air and industrial pollution, especially in urban centers like Lahore, this drone-based initiative is seen as a game-changer in the fight for a cleaner, healthier environment.
