The Pakistani government has launched a nationwide digital census focused on electricity billing as part of its broader Electric City Plan.
As per the new initiative, all electricity distribution companies, including the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), have been instructed to conduct door-to-door surveys. These surveys will be carried out by third-party agencies to maintain transparency and accuracy.
The digital census is designed to collect comprehensive consumer data such as CNIC numbers, the number of electricity meters per property, and whether the connections are registered under the owner’s or tenant’s name. It will also gather information on the tariff category applied to each meter and collect mobile numbers to improve communication and service delivery.
Officials describe the initiative as a vital step toward upgrading the country’s outdated power infrastructure. It aims to resolve persistent issues like billing errors, illegal connections, and poor customer data management.
The Electric City Plan is expected to help build a more transparent and digital energy sector, enhancing service quality and enabling better policy decisions based on reliable, real-time data.
