Pakistan is lagging behind most regional countries in launching 5G services, with only Afghanistan behind in the adoption curve. Experts say this delay places the country deep into a technology gap.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) stated that 5G was launched globally in 2019. Despite being the fifth-most populous country with over 200 million broadband users, Pakistan currently operates with just 274 MHz of mobile spectrum, making it the most spectrum-starved nation in the region.
Officials emphasized that the spectrum allocated by PTA is technology-neutral, allowing use for both current and future networks. However, limited spectrum availability and a shortage of compatible devices have slowed progress toward next-generation networks.
5G is not only for smartphones. It also supports IoT networks, smart cities, and industrial applications. Network slicing allows operators to create customized network segments for different uses. Experts noted that Pakistan is already seven years late in adopting 5G, while countries like the United States are preparing for 6G development.
The upcoming spectrum auction is seen as a turning point for improving mobile networks in Pakistan. Government officials said the auction will be technology-neutral, allowing operators to use spectrum across 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and future networks.
Pakistan is expected to receive nearly 600 MHz of additional spectrum. This expansion could reduce network congestion and improve service quality. Officials also highlighted that low 5G handset penetration will not delay the auction. Efforts are underway to rationalize mobile device taxes and promote local manufacturing. Pakistan currently has 37 local mobile manufacturers, and PTA is coordinating with them to produce 5G-enabled devices.
Authorities believe that once the spectrum is auctioned, 5G rollout could begin in major cities within six months. Meanwhile, expanded spectrum use will immediately strengthen existing 4G and 3G networks across Pakistan.
