Pakistan Introduces Significant Digital Upgrade to Passports

Pakistan has decided to gradually transition to a fully digital passport system as part of a broader effort to modernize passport and immigration services across the country.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on passport and immigration reforms chaired by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The meeting focused on introducing measures to make passport-related services more efficient, transparent, secure, and convenient for citizens.

One of the key decisions made during the session was the phased implementation of a complete e-passport system. Officials believe the move will strengthen security, improve transparency, and significantly reduce the risk of passport fraud and forgery. However, authorities have not yet announced a timeline for replacing traditional passports entirely.

During the briefing, Director General of Passports and Immigration Muhammad Ali Randhawa informed the minister about ongoing reforms and future initiatives aimed at improving service delivery.

The meeting also approved a policy under which applicants using premium passport services will be charged based on the actual cost of the facilities provided. Officials said this approach would help ensure transparency in service fees.

In another major development, authorities confirmed that preparations have been completed for the launch of a passport home-delivery service. The facility will be available to both domestic and overseas Pakistanis, allowing applicants to receive their passports at their preferred addresses without visiting collection centers.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also announced that all passport offices across Pakistan will adopt a cashless payment system from July 1. The initiative is intended to simplify transactions and provide a safer and more convenient payment process for applicants.

Additionally, online passport applications will be integrated into the Pak-ID platform, while a dedicated business passport policy will be developed in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

According to the Ministry of Interior, an e-passport contains an embedded electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and personal information. The document also includes a contactless NFC chip and a digital signature, enabling electronic verification. Pakistan’s e-passports comply with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), enhancing security and facilitating smoother international travel.
