Preparations are in full swing for Pakistan’s first high-speed rail project, with a proposal for a Lahore-to-Rawalpindi high-speed rail link submitted for approval to the Punjab Chief Minister’s office.
The project, estimated to cost around $1.6 billion, has been formulated by the Departments of Transport and Mass Transit. Documents indicate that the high-speed rail will allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to under two hours.

The proposal calls for the development of an action plan, leveraging a pre-feasibility study previously conducted by the railway department. This study will be funded by the Department of Planning and Development. However, securing the initial funding for this ambitious venture poses a substantial challenge.
If approved, the high-speed rail will mark a significant advancement in modernizing Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, offering a fast and efficient travel option between these two major cities.
