After an eleven-year break, Pakistan Idol is making a highly anticipated comeback with a brand-new panel of judges featuring Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, former Strings band member Bilal Maqsood, singer Zeb Bangash, and actor Fawad Khan.
Originally adapted from the British show Pop Idol, Pakistan Idol premiered in 2014 on Geo TV and quickly gained popularity across the country. The first season featured judges Ali Azmat (Junoon), Bushra Ansari, and Hadiqa Kiani, with Lahore’s Zamad Baig taking home the winner’s title.
For many contestants, Pakistan Idol proved to be a major career stepping stone. “The show gives you exposure,” said Waqas Ali Vicky, a participant from the first season. “It helps you grow musically and professionally.”
Finalist Rose Marie echoed the sentiment, calling the platform a dream for aspiring artists. “This kind of national exposure is rare,” she said, adding that the show’s management was also impressive.
Contestants highlighted how Pakistan Idol provided an environment focused solely on music, allowing them to experiment with genres and learn from each other’s styles. “We were raw talent,” Vicky said. “There were people to guide us, and we grew together.”
Beyond the show, many participants formed lasting connections in the industry. Marie shared that her experience led to numerous opportunities in TV, film, and advertising. “I met people who later gave me work,” she said.
Zoya Merchant, director at MHL Global, the company behind the show’s new rollout, told Variety that the aim is to showcase Pakistan’s musical talent both nationally and internationally. Online auditions and casting calls will begin soon, with a premiere date to follow.
