Pakistan Hockey Captain Calls for Asia Cup 2025 to Be Relocated

Pakistan Hockey Captain Urges Shift of 2025 Men’s Asia Cup from India Amid Political Tensions

Pakistan men’s hockey team captain Imad Shakeel Butt has expressed serious reservations over the upcoming 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, urging the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to relocate the event from India due to escalating political tensions between the two neighboring nations.

The tournament is currently scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 7, 2025, in Rajgir, Bihar, and acts as a crucial qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup. For Pakistan, this competition represents a critical opportunity to secure a place in global hockey’s biggest tournament.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Imad stated:

“The Asia Cup is crucial for us. Given the current political situation, we strongly believe the venue should be reconsidered to ensure fair participation and a neutral environment.”

His statement follows growing concerns that Pakistan’s participation may be hindered by diplomatic roadblocks. Although no official decision has been announced, there are reports that Indian authorities may delay or deny visas to Pakistani players, citing security concerns.

Despite the uncertainty, the Pakistani captain emphasized that the national squad remains focused on its immediate objectives. The team is currently training for the FIH Nations Cup, a pathway to the prestigious FIH Pro League, one of international hockey’s elite tournaments.

“We are training hard, and our mindset is clear. The players are motivated and ready to give their best,” Imad added.

The 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup is not the only major sporting event under scrutiny due to Pakistan-India tensions. The 2025 Cricket Asia Cup and the Women’s ODI World Cup—both scheduled in India—are also raising eyebrows amid ongoing diplomatic strain.

Pakistan and India share a storied and intense hockey rivalry, but their on-field contests are often overshadowed by off-field politics. With the Asia Cup just months away, all eyes are now on the Asian Hockey Federation to make a decision that could significantly influence Pakistan’s road to the 2026 Hockey World Cup.
