Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar chaired an inter-ministerial meeting to review progress on Pakistan’s privatization agenda
Officials updated the committee on the ongoing procedures for privatizing major state-owned entities, including Pakistan International Airlines. Dar instructed the Privatization Ministry and the Privatization Commission to speed up the process and directed all relevant ministries to provide full support, stressing the need to place these entities on a sustainable, profitable path.
The meeting was attended by the PM’s adviser on privatization, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, NC SIFC members, the privatization secretary, and other senior officials.
Earlier this month, Privatization Minister Muhammad Ali said the government aims to privatize PIA by October. Pakistan has been pushing to sell the loss-making airline to raise funds and reform state enterprises under a $7 billion IMF program.
The IMF has repeatedly urged Pakistan to privatize struggling SOEs, noting they hold assets equal to 44% of GDP but contribute minimally to employment, with nearly half running at a loss.
