Pakistan Drops to 135th in Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perception Index
Pakistan has slipped two spots to rank 135th out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), according to the watchdog’s latest report released on February 11, 2025.
The country’s score dropped to 27 out of 100, making it the 46th most corrupt nation globally. This decline continues a downward trend from 2023, when Pakistan ranked 133rd with a slightly better score.
Declining Scores Across Key Indicators
The CPI, which compiles data from eight independent sources, highlighted worsening governance and transparency in Pakistan:

- Varieties of Democracy Project: Score fell from 20 to 14
- Economist Intelligence Unit: Score declined from 20 to 18
- World Economic Survey: Score dropped significantly from 45 to 33
Regional & Global Comparisons
In South Asia, India ranked 96th, outperforming Pakistan by 39 places, while Bangladesh placed 151st and Afghanistan ranked 165th.
Globally, Denmark retained its title as the least corrupt country, followed by Finland and Singapore. Meanwhile, South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela ranked as the most corruption-prone nations.
Corruption & Climate Governance Concerns
The report also linked corruption to climate challenges, identifying Pakistan as a high-risk country struggling with both issues. Transparency International stressed the need for robust accountability measures to ensure transparent management of climate-related funds.
“Countries must implement stronger accountability measures to ensure effective use of resources,” the report stated, emphasizing the link between corruption and environmental governance.
