Pakistan amazed as 2025’s first supermoon lights up the sky

Pakistanis were treated to a breathtaking sight on Tuesday night as the first supermoon of 2025 illuminated the skies across the country, casting a brilliant glow visible from Karachi to Islamabad.

The moon appeared noticeably larger and brighter than usual, creating a mesmerizing scene that lasted from dusk until dawn. According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the moon was approximately 224,000 miles from Earth—making it about 6.6% bigger and 13% brighter than an average full moon.

Excited skywatchers shared hundreds of photos and videos online, capturing the celestial spectacle that dominated social media feeds throughout the night. SUPARCO confirmed that the phenomenon was clearly visible nationwide, thanks to mostly clear weather conditions.

A supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth, known as perigee, making it appear unusually bright and large in the sky.

SUPARCO further revealed that this was just the first of three supermoons to grace Pakistan’s skies this year. The next two will appear on November 5 and December 5, 2025—offering astronomy lovers more opportunities to witness the moon at its most dazzling
