Pakistan Eases Social Media Restrictions Amid Rising Tensions with India

Pakistan has partially lifted its restrictions on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), restoring access for many users who no longer need to use VPNs or proxy services. The move marks the end of several months of state-imposed curbs that were put in place following the general elections in February 2024. Since then, millions of Pakistanis had to rely on third-party tools to access the platform, which has now been partially re-opened.

The decision comes at a time of increasing military tensions with neighboring India. The easing of restrictions has brought relief to many social media users in Pakistan, who had been unable to freely access the platform. The development suggests a shift in the government’s stance on internet freedom, though full access has yet to be restored.

This announcement coincides with heightened military hostilities, as Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, confirmed that Indian forces had conducted airstrikes on multiple locations across Pakistan, including Kotli, Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and Muridke. In the attack, eight civilians were martyred, and 33 others were injured.

In retaliation, Pakistan’s armed forces successfully shot down five Indian aircraft. According to security sources, the aircraft were targeted after violating Pakistani airspace, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The military response highlights Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty amid growing regional tensions.
