Pakistan has firmly rejected Indian media reports alleging that it sought a ceasefire following recent hostilities with India, dismissing the claims as “entirely baseless.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that Pakistan acted strictly in self-defence against Indian aggression and never requested a ceasefire. The spokesperson stressed that the ceasefire was facilitated through third-party diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar reiterated in multiple media interviews that Pakistan’s military response was solely a reaction to Indian provocations.

The Foreign Office provided a detailed account of the events, stating that on May 10, 2025, at around 8:15 AM, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Senator Dar to convey India’s willingness to ceasefire if Pakistan agreed. Dar confirmed Pakistan’s acceptance. Shortly after, at approximately 9:00 AM, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal also reached out with a similar message, to which Pakistan again agreed.

The statement condemned Indian media reports as a “distortion of facts”, clarifying that Pakistan only consented to the ceasefire after India’s position was communicated through diplomatic channels. Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to sovereignty and self-defence, acknowledging that external mediation helped de-escalate tensions.

Contrary to Pakistan’s account, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government have repeatedly claimed that the May 2025 ceasefire resulted from direct military-level talks between the two nations, denying any third-party involvement.

The discrepancy in narratives continues to fuel diplomatic tensions, with both sides standing by their versions of events.
