Defence Minister Khawaja Asif revealed that Pakistan and Afghanistan held a meeting in Turkey just two hours earlier, with results expected by tomorrow.
Speaking to reporters, Asif warned that if peace talks fail, conflict could become unavoidable. He said the first round of negotiations took place in Qatar, while the second is underway in Turkey, adding that both nations are showing interest in peace.
Asif noted that Qatar and Turkey are mediating the dialogue, expressing hope that a mutual agreement would soon be finalized.
Referring to Pakistan’s decades-long hospitality toward Afghan refugees, he said nearly four million Afghans have lived in Pakistan over 40 years. “It’s painful to think that a nation we supported for decades could allow terrorism against us,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for a balanced, neighborly relationship — one that respects sovereignty without full integration. Asif also clarified that Afghan citizens who entered Pakistan legally on visas must return once those visas expire, as such documents do not grant permanent residency rights.
