Andy Pycroft, the controversial referee, has once again been appointed to officiate Sunday’s high-stakes Pakistan-India clash, leading Pakistan’s cricket team to cancel its pre-match press conference.
Pycroft previously apologised to skipper Salman Ali Agha and the team manager after stopping players from shaking hands with India during the Asia Cup group-stage toss. Despite Pakistan’s protest and calls for his removal, the ICC stood by him.
Ahead of the Super Four encounter, Pakistan brought in a motivational speaker and intensified training in Dubai with focus on batting, bowling, and fielding. Sources said batting failures were openly admitted, with Head Coach Mike Hesson stressing strike rotation and fewer dot balls.
India, unbeaten so far, go into the match as favourites after defeating Pakistan earlier. The rematch is set for 7:30 pm (Pakistan time) in Dubai, where ticket prices have surged to at least 350 dirhams (Rs27,000).
The September 14 group-stage clash saw further controversy when India allegedly refused a handshake with Pakistan, fueling tensions between the two boards. Despite Pakistan’s warning of a possible boycott, Pycroft remains in charge for the much-anticipated showdown
