Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik met with Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Tarik Ali Khan to explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in Pakistan’s minerals and energy sectors. The meeting highlighted opportunities for investment, technical assistance, and long-term development.
According to an official statement, the Canadian high commissioner praised the success of Barrick Gold’s Reko Diq project, noting it demonstrated Pakistan’s potential for attracting international investment in minerals. He said Canada encourages more Canadian companies to participate in the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF) and emphasized that Natural Resources Canada is ready to support collaboration in the sector.
The high commissioner also mentioned his visit to the Reko Diq site, where he observed community development initiatives, including schools, healthcare facilities, and water purification projects, highlighting the social impact of mineral investments.
Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik described Reko Diq as one of Pakistan’s largest recent international financing achievements. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to labour safety, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, and long-term sustainable development in mineral projects.
The Canadian high commissioner invited Pakistan to participate in the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention 2026 in March, calling it an opportunity to showcase the country’s mineral potential to global investors. He also noted that Canada is exploring technical support initiatives in the energy sector.
The petroleum minister welcomed Canada’s offer, saying that knowledge-sharing and technical expertise would enhance operational systems and build investor confidence. Both sides agreed to continue engagement to strengthen cooperation in the minerals and energy sectors as part of broader Pakistan-Canada relations.
