Pakistan has informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about escalating tensions in South Asia following the killing of 26 people in the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) tourist resort of Pahalgam. The UNSC held an emergency closed-door session at Pakistan’s request, where Ambassador Asim Iftikhar briefed all 15 council members, including the five permanent members.
Ambassador Iftikhar reiterated Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir dispute, highlighting it as an unresolved issue that has persisted for over 70 years. He expressed concerns over India’s recent unilateral actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a breach of international law. He also condemned the ongoing human rights violations in IIOJK, stressing the continued suffering of unarmed Kashmiris.

Regarding the Pahalgam attack, the Pakistani envoy firmly denied any involvement and offered full cooperation for an independent international investigation into the incident. He emphasized that sustainable peace in the region is unattainable without a fair resolution of the Kashmir issue, in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Ambassador Iftikhar concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty while remaining open to dialogue based on mutual respect and dignity, underscoring that talks are the only viable path to regional peace.
