The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted another period of monsoon rainfall across several parts of the country from July 29 to August 5. The weather system may bring heavy showers along with risks of urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and travel difficulties in vulnerable areas.
According to the latest weather advisory issued by the PMD, monsoon winds coming from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are expected to enter upper and central parts of Pakistan from July 29. Meanwhile, a western disturbance affecting northern regions is likely to become stronger from August 1, increasing chances of rainfall.
The Met Office stated that thunderstorms with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall are expected in Kashmir, upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan during the forecast period. Areas in southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan may also receive rainfall, with some districts experiencing moderate to heavy showers.
The PMD warned that intense rainfall could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad between July 30 and August 4. Several parts of Sindh, including Nawabshah, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Tando Allahyar, may also face flooding risks from July 31 to August 2.
The weather department further cautioned that flash floods could occur in local streams and nullahs across Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Dera Ghazi Khan hill torrents, and northeastern Balochistan. Landslides are also expected in mountainous regions due to heavy rainfall.
The PMD advised tourists and travellers to remain careful while visiting affected areas. Farmers have also been encouraged to organise agricultural activities according to weather conditions and take protective measures for livestock.
All relevant government departments and emergency response authorities have been instructed to stay alert and take precautionary steps to reduce possible damage from the upcoming monsoon system.
